Requirements
- GCSEs in Maths and English at grade 4 or above (or equivalent Level 2)
- Right to live and work in the UK
- Been ordinarily resident in the UK for the last 3 years
- Some awareness of operating department roles and the theatre environment
- A genuine interest in career growth in clinical care
- Willingness to take on clinical placements and respond to emergency scenarios
Salary Details
The role pays between £24,071 and £25,674 per year, aligned to Band 3 on the NHS Agenda for Change pay scale.
About the Role
This Operating Department Practice Apprenticeship Programme runs for three years and offers a rare opportunity to blend academic learning with real-time hospital experience. You’ll be based at Royal Bolton Hospital, rotating through elective and emergency theatre settings while supporting patient care. Alongside weekly academic learning at Bolton University, you’ll spend 30 hours per week on clinical placement. You’ll get involved in surgical cases, respond to acute events across the hospital, and gain the confidence to work under pressure. Everything is structured around helping you succeed, from your study time to your annual leave, which is set by the university.
This isn’t just training. It’s a head start in a field where your work directly supports patients at critical moments.

- Assist in preparing operating theatres and patients for surgery
- Learn to support anaesthetic, surgical, and recovery teams during procedures
- Take part in real-time responses to emergencies across hospital departments
- Follow a structured curriculum set by Bolton University
- Document care processes and help maintain high safety standards
- Engage with remote learning modules and apply academic content clinically
- Be a proactive part of a supportive team delivering essential care
