Requirements

  • Primary medical qualification and GMC registration with a license to practise
  • At least 2 years postgraduate experience including 3 months in intensive care
  • Demonstrated advanced airway skills and independent decision making
  • Strong communication and diagnostic skills
  • Previous paid NHS experience as a doctor
  • Experience in supervising and teaching junior staff
  • Willingness to complete audits, training and participate in simulation

Salary Details

Estimated between £42,000 and £60,000, depending on experience and level of training.

About the Role

This ST3+ equivalent post is a fantastic route for doctors ready to deepen their practice in adult critical care and retrieval medicine. Based within the NECTAR service, you’ll support the transfer of critically ill adults across the North East, North Cumbria, Yorkshire and beyond.

You won’t just be doing clinical work. You’ll also contribute to case reviews, simulation training, research and quality improvement. The post provides access to structured learning pathways, including courses like APLS, NAPSTAR, and flight medicine training. Each fellow is encouraged to complete a substantial clinical project, with the freedom to pursue academic or practical impact.

This role strikes a unique balance between autonomy and mentorship. While you’ll be expected to work with indirect supervision, you’ll also get strong support to build your confidence, shape your expertise, and grow professionally in a truly supportive work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transfer critically ill adults and children by land or air with appropriate supervision
  • Carry out triage, preparation and delivery of practitioner-led transfers
  • Present and review complex clinical cases
  • Support hands-on teaching and contribute to simulation training
  • Join clinical audits and contribute to research or improvement projects
  • Complete formal teaching and course attendance as part of professional development
  • Document clinical competence via work-based assessments
