Requirements
- Three GCSEs grade 4/C or above including English and Maths
- Strong communication and keyboard skills
- Ability to prioritise and stay organised in a fast-paced setting
- Comfortable handling samples and following safety standards
- Open to shift work including weekends and bank holidays when needed
- Desirable: Experience in labs, customer service or NHS setting
- Desirable: Qualification in Healthcare Science or IT/typing
Salary Details
The role pays £24,465 a year pro rata, aligned to NHS Band 2, with enhancements for approved unsocial hours.
About the Role
This isn’t just another entry job. It’s your chance to become part of a tight-knit clinical support team that plays a vital role in diagnosing and monitoring treatments across Newcastle’s NHS services.
You’ll join the Blood Sciences Department, specifically in the Reception area, where you’ll receive, register and prepare samples for analysis. With training, you’ll also operate lab equipment, run simple diagnostic tests, and support the data flow that drives patient care. Every tube, tag and test you handle helps a doctor make faster, safer decisions.

Key Responsibilities
- Receive and prepare samples from GPs and hospitals
- Register patient details accurately into lab systems
- Support separation and storage of blood, serum and plasma
- Assist with basic pathology tests under supervision
- Operate lab equipment with care and precision
- Help maintain quality assurance systems and lab protocols
- Follow local health and safety procedures at all times
- Answer telephone queries and retrieve results for clinical staff
