Requirements
- Master’s degree in data science or healthcare engineering, or equivalent senior experience
- Strong coding skills in Python and/or R
- Advanced experience with machine learning model development
- Knowledge of SQL Server and cloud-based data platforms
- Experience with Microsoft Azure and Power BI
- Ability to analyse and interpret complex healthcare data
- Strong communication skills to connect with both technical and clinical stakeholders
- A collaborative mindset with proven project management experience
Salary Details
The role offers between £70,396 and £80,837 per year depending on skills and experience.
About the Role
The Lead Data Scientist will establish and guide a new data science function across the trust. They’ll design, test and deploy machine learning and AI models on the Microsoft Azure platform. This includes exploring generative AI to develop small and large language models that can transform clinical and operational delivery.
It’s not just about coding. The postholder will work closely with leadership, clinicians and administrators to understand real-world challenges and turn them into impactful solutions. They’ll also provide line management to graduate placements, bridging academic theory with applied healthcare innovation. This role is about impact at scale, driving both technical excellence and meaningful patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of machine learning and generative AI models that improve healthcare delivery
- Design, implement and monitor AI models within the trust’s cloud platform to ensure high performance and reliability
- Translate complex requirements into data science solutions that address patient and operational needs
- Shape long-term strategies for data architecture and standards in partnership with stakeholders
- Partner with the digital team to strengthen data security, continuity and scalability
- Build relationships with clinical and academic partners to accelerate innovation
- Mentor graduate placements to grow the next generation of data scientists
