Requirements
- GCSE English Language and Mathematics (Grades A–C) or equivalent.
- NVQ Level 4 in health or social care, or NVQ3 plus additional diploma-level training.
- Relevant healthcare or social care experience at Band 3 level or equivalent.
- Strong communication skills—able to talk sensitively with patients and families.
- Organisational skills to manage calls, records, and follow-ups effectively.
- Empathy and patience when supporting people through emotional challenges.
- Team player with flexibility and a calm, objective attitude.
- IT literacy and ability to retrieve information from different systems.
Desirable: coaching or teaching qualification, ECDL certificate, and familiarity with Macmillan Cancer Support.

This Band 4 NHS role offers £27,485 to £30,162 per year, depending on experience.
About the Role
As a Cancer Support Worker, you’ll join a well-established and caring team that provides personalised guidance and emotional support to people living with cancer. Working closely with clinical teams, you’ll ensure each patient receives the right help at the right time—from telephone advice and needs assessments to care planning and access to local services.
Your role matters because it bridges the gap between treatment and emotional wellbeing. You’ll help patients navigate their care journey, empowering them to make informed choices and manage their health more confidently.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide telephone advice and support, ensuring patients receive timely guidance.
- Recognise and act quickly when someone’s condition changes or deteriorates.
- Assist with holistic needs assessments to shape individual care plans.
- Make proactive calls to monitor ongoing needs and prevent potential issues.
- Guide patients to appropriate services and encourage self-management where possible.
- Stay updated on local cancer support resources and information.
- Promote healthy lifestyle choices to improve recovery and wellbeing.
- Coach patients and carers on what symptoms or signs to look out for and how to seek help.
Each action you take helps improve the patient’s journey, ensuring they feel seen, supported, and cared for throughout their experience.
