Requirements
- NVQ Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience in a clinical care setting
- Previous experience as a Healthcare Assistant in hospital, secure, or primary care environments
- Confident performing ECGs, phlebotomy, NEWS2 assessments, and wound care
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Understanding of risk assessment and person-centred care planning

Salary Details
This Band 3 role under the Agenda for Change pay scheme offers between £26,937 and £28,598 per annum, inclusive of the Recruitment and Retention Premium.
About the Role
As a Healthcare Assistant at HMP Swaleside, you’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team supporting patients in a secure environment. You’ll provide hands-on clinical care and health promotion that helps individuals rebuild their health and confidence as they prepare for life beyond prison.
You’ll assist registered nurses in delivering physical care such as taking vital signs, ECGs, and blood samples. You’ll also engage patients in meaningful conversations that support their psychological and emotional wellbeing. Every task you do contributes to helping someone recover, learn responsibility, and move forward positively.
This role goes beyond routine care. You’ll learn to navigate complex needs, support vulnerable individuals, and work within a service that values compassion, safety, and respect.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of high-quality nursing care that promotes dignity and recovery
- Carry out ECGs, blood pressure checks, wound care, and NEWS2 assessments with accuracy and care
- Contribute to health promotion programmes that educate and empower patients
- Maintain precise and timely documentation using SystmOne
- Respond effectively to emergencies, ensuring patient safety at all times
- Uphold infection control, confidentiality, and professional standards within the prison environment
- Foster positive relationships with healthcare teams, prison staff, and external partners
