Requirements
- Minimum of a second-class Bachelor’s degree in psychology or related subject
- Evidence of working with children or young people experiencing mental health difficulties
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Capacity to study independently and apply new learning under supervision
- Team player with a caring, empathetic approach
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills
- Commitment to infection prevention and control procedures
- Flexible attitude to meet service and learning requirements
Desirable but not essential:
- Training in nursing, social work, counselling, or occupational therapy
- Experience in mental health or youth-related services

Salary Details
Starting salary between £33,094 and £36,195 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. Includes NHS pension and access to professional development funding.
About the Role
This trainee post blends academic learning and hands-on practice, giving you the foundation to build a lasting career in child mental health. As a Trainee Children and Young Person’s Wellbeing Practitioner, you’ll be part of the Psychological Medicine service within the paediatric division, delivering supervised, evidence-based interventions to children and young people with mild to moderate mental health difficulties.
Through your studies and clinical work, you’ll learn to assess, plan, and deliver outcome-focused treatments while supporting families to manage challenges and build resilience. You’ll gain real experience that directly shapes the wellbeing of young people across London, helping them thrive in everyday life.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver evidence-based interventions under supervision to support children and young people’s emotional wellbeing
- Assess and manage risk while ensuring all care follows safeguarding standards
- Support self-management by helping families develop practical plans to improve mental health outcomes
- Attend multi-disciplinary meetings to ensure holistic and joined-up care
- Maintain accurate records of progress, using data to inform treatment planning
- Engage in training and supervision to apply learning in real-world scenarios
- Promote inclusivity and equality in every aspect of your practice
