Requirements

  • NMC registration in Child, Mental Health, or Learning Disability nursing branch.
  • Proven experience working with children or young people with mental health difficulties.
  • Understanding of safeguarding, clinical governance, and research-led practice.
  • Ability to manage and de-escalate challenging situations effectively.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and IT documentation skills.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Desirable: Advanced qualification in CAMHS or assessor/supervisor training.

Salary Details

This Band 5 role offers £37,259 to £45,356 per annum (inclusive), based on experience and hours worked.

About the Role

As a Staff Nurse in the Mildred Creak Unit, you’ll provide holistic, family-centred care for young people aged 7 to 13 with severe and complex mental health needs. You’ll help them manage daily routines, participate in therapy, and build life skills within a nurturing therapeutic setting.

You’ll work closely with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT), contributing to care planning, facilitating therapeutic groups, and ensuring emotional and physical wellbeing. Each interaction matters here — whether you’re assisting with medication, supporting physiotherapy, or helping a child express their feelings. Your empathy, patience, and professionalism will make a real difference every single day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care.
  • Facilitate therapeutic and daily living activities that promote recovery.
  • Support children and families through understanding, communication, and trust.
  • Collaborate effectively with MDT colleagues to create individualised care plans.
  • Maintain high standards of documentation and reporting in line with governance policies.
  • Take charge of the ward when required, ensuring continuity of care and leadership.
