Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking a highly motivated Trainee Healthcare Scientist to join the aseptic unit in Pharmacy. Under the guidance of the Lead Pharmacist for Cancer Services and the Technical Managers for Aseptic Services, this unit operates under Exemption under Section 10 of the Medicines Act 1968 and prepares aseptically compounded chemotherapy and monoclonal antibodies.

The ideal candidate will have a keen eye for detail, strong communication skills, and a flexible approach to working as part of a multidisciplinary team. Over the 24-month apprenticeship, trainees will work 4 days a week within the unit and complete 1 day of virtual learning with West Suffolk College. Upon successful completion, trainees will qualify as Science Manufacturing Technicians at Band 4 and be eligible to register with the Science Council.

This opportunity is ideal for those with a NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Service Skills or anyone with an interest in expanding their experience in pharmacy services.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Monitor the aseptic unit environment through broth media use and record temperature and pressure readings.
  • Assist in the assembly of raw materials, including ingredients, worksheets, and labels.
  • Support the preparation of chemotherapy and monoclonal antibodies, including volume checks and final product inspections.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and annual cleaning and disinfecting of the unit, following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Order and replenish stock as needed.
  • Support the wider pharmacy team, including working on late night, weekend, and bank holiday shifts, as part of a rota.
  • Complete assignments and projects as part of virtual learning, with some independent study required.
