Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a two-year fully funded Data Engineering apprenticeship at The Christie NHS FT. The successful candidate will earn a Band 5 salary while undertaking the Cambridge Spark Level 5 Data Engineering qualification course. This course combines work-based learning with academic study, providing training in SQL Server technologies and Python. The role includes both remote training and hands-on experience to build technical and professional skills within a high-quality business and clinical reporting framework.
The apprentice will work as part of a team responsible for delivering high-quality business and complex clinical reporting structures from various systems, ensuring robust and efficient Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes. You’ll have the chance to develop new tools and technologies, contributing to the migration from legacy systems. This is a unique opportunity to gain invaluable experience in one of Europe’s leading cancer centres while achieving a formal qualification.
Main Duties of the Job
- Maintain and deliver data transfer pipelines from clinical and operational systems to the Christie Central Data Repository (CCDR).
- Support the design and development of data engineering processes, using modern tools and technologies.
- Provide technical support to users, communicating detailed technical requirements to non-technical staff.
- Develop and maintain documentation for the support, maintenance, and quality assurance of Data Engineering processes.
- Participate in regular sprint planning, managing your workload according to Data Engineering standards.
- Develop test plans to ensure products are stable, maintainable, and operate according to requirements.
- Contribute to business continuity and disaster recovery plans through regular exercises.
Skills and Qualifications
- Degree qualification or equivalent experience.
- 3 A-levels or equivalent qualifications.
- GCSE Maths and English.
- Experience with Microsoft SQL Server and delivering data/reporting projects.
Desirable Skills and Knowledge
- Experience with Python, C#, or SQL Server Integration Services.
- Understanding of data governance and security standards.
- Experience in handling ETL processes, using web APIs, and providing technical support.
