Job Overview
A vacancy has arisen for a Band 6 Specialist Diabetes Nurse. This role involves providing excellent patient care within a supportive and dynamic team at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The position emphasizes delivering patient-centered care, mentoring junior staff, and supporting diabetes management through advanced clinical expertise.
Band 5 nurses passionate about a career in diabetes care are encouraged to apply, as suitable candidates may be considered if Band 6 applicants are not identified. The role involves working across countywide outpatient clinics, supported by a well-established team of specialist diabetes nurses, dietitians, and specialty doctors. Regular supervision and induction will be provided by the Lead Band 7 Specialist Nurse Diabetes.
Main Duties of the Job
- Participate actively in Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings, joint treatment sessions, and specialist interest group meetings.
- Apply specialist diabetes skills to encourage patient self-management, maximize rehabilitation, and enhance understanding of medication and long-term care.
- Lead and mentor junior staff, supporting them in achieving and maintaining competencies.
- Manage outpatient clinic operations, including administrative tasks such as dictating letters and organizing follow-ups.
- Utilize clinical reasoning to assess, diagnose, plan, and deliver a range of treatment options, amending care plans as required.
- Support patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.
- Collaborate with the Lead Nurse, Matron, and Clinical Lead to ensure operational delivery of high-quality care, clinical safety, and effective governance across the countywide diabetes nursing service.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Registered Nurse with the Nursing Midwifery Council.
- Diabetes Nursing Qualification (e.g., Certificate in Diabetes Care or equivalent).
- Experience as a diabetes specialist nurse.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Teaching or mentor qualification.
Desirable Criteria
- Non-Medical Prescriber qualification.
- Advanced IT skills, including hospital IT systems and patient portals.
- Flexibility and self-motivation to handle unpredictable demands.
Safeguarding and Recruitment
