Job Overview
The paediatric liaison specialist is responsible for the strategic development and operational implementation of safeguarding initiatives at The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This role focuses on facilitating appropriate referral and liaison between hospital services, community practitioners, and other health professionals. Responsibilities include acting as a professional resource and link between acute, community, and primary care services, while promoting effective communication within these areas. The position ensures the safeguarding and welfare promotion of children, young people, and unborn babies encountered at the Trust, in alignment with relevant national guidelines and frameworks such as Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023).
Main Duties of the Job
The role supports professionals in identifying vulnerability indicators in children, young people, and families, enabling preventative work and targeted support. It includes ensuring effective discharge planning with school nurses and health visitors and supporting robust communication pathways between acute and community settings. Responsibilities include:
- Developing, reviewing, and implementing policies to promote best practices within healthcare settings.
- Providing specialist knowledge and guidance on safeguarding issues.
- Participating in clinical audits, research, governance, and staff development initiatives.
- Managing the paediatric liaison administrator.
- Ensuring accurate and timely record-keeping in accordance with Trust policies.
The role also requires delivering training on safeguarding children, acting as a clinical role model, and contributing to annual board reports and quarterly safeguarding reviews.

Detailed Job Description and Responsibilities
Key result areas include:
- Vision, Strategy, and Development: Establishing communication pathways between acute and community services. Providing specialist advice and ensuring compliance with safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Leadership, Culture, and Values: Reviewing policies, ensuring effective communication of complex information, and leading the development of safeguarding training programs. Acting as a role model and contributing to staff appraisals and personal development plans.
- Governance, Quality, and Performance: Supporting clinical governance, risk assessments, and audits. Facilitating evidence-based practices and contributing to quality improvement initiatives.
Additional responsibilities include delivering presentations, facilitating safeguarding forums, and producing accurate reports on safeguarding activities.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- RN/RSCN/RM/RNLD qualification with current NMC registration.
- Post-registration experience and Level 3 safeguarding certification.
- Knowledge of collaborative working with health and social care providers.
- Demonstrated reflective practice and teaching experience.
- Proficiency in report writing and IT skills, including MS Teams.
Desirable Criteria
- SCPHN or equivalent qualification.
- Safeguarding supervision experience or qualification.
- Teaching qualification and understanding of public health principles.
- Experience in change management and auditing.
