The Community Midwifery team based at South Lakes Birth Centre is recruiting enthusiastic and dynamic Band 6 midwives.

Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, kindness, and a commitment to woman-centered care. The role requires a flexible approach to support overnight availability via on-call services to facilitate home births or provide care at South Lakes Birth Centre as part of the escalation policy (once or twice weekly). A commitment to working 30+ hours per week and possession of a valid driving license are essential.

The role is open to experienced community midwives, those seeking a new career direction, and newly qualified midwives (subject to a six-month probationary period).

Main Duties of the Job

  • Work as an autonomous practitioner within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintain effective relationships within the community midwifery team to ensure optimal care for women.
  • Deliver high-quality, woman-centered maternity care.
  • Provide leadership, facilitate teaching opportunities, and support all staff grades to achieve the highest care standards.
  • Educate women and their families, offering care, advice, and supervision throughout the pregnancy continuum.
  • Facilitate learning for student midwives and medical students.
  • Ensure timely referrals for mothers or children to appropriate agencies or specialist midwifery teams.

Working for the Organisation

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay operates across three main hospitals:

  • Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow
  • Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) in Lancaster
  • Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal

Additional community healthcare services are provided through facilities including Millom Hospital, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and RLI offer general hospital services, including Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units, and various consultant-led services. WGH provides general services, outpatient care, diagnostics, therapies, day case, and inpatient surgery.

Community services are delivered in homes, clinics, GP practices, and hospitals, aiming to support independence and improve health through high-quality care.
