Why This Role Matters
We are looking for a caring, proactive individual to become part of our established Cancer Support Worker team. In this position, you will play a pivotal role in delivering tailored support to people living with or affected by cancer. Working in partnership with clinical teams and various hospital services, you will help enhance patient well-being and ensure a positive journey throughout treatment and recovery.
What You’ll Do
- Coordinate Patient Needs
Organize essential appointments, assessments, and tests so that patients can easily access services in a timely manner. - Respond to Emergencies
Recognize changes in a patient’s condition and promptly notify clinical teams, ensuring rapid support and intervention. - Conduct Holistic Assessments
Participate in evaluating patients’ emotional, physical, and social needs, contributing to personalized care plans. - Deliver Proactive Care
Initiate scheduled calls to identify areas where patients may need additional resources or guidance, fostering a proactive approach. - Provide Practical Guidance
Refer patients to suitable support services or programs, and encourage independence where appropriate. - Promote Healthy Lifestyles
Offer advice to patients on maintaining an active and balanced life, helping them feel empowered during and after treatment. - Organize Well-Being Events
Help plan and carry out Health and Well-Being sessions and other self-care initiatives to keep patients engaged and informed. - Develop Educational Materials
Assist with creating leaflets, website content, and other informational resources that help patients and families navigate their care journey. - Contribute to Service Improvement
Participate in research, audits, and other development efforts aimed at enhancing cancer support services. - Support the Macmillan Centre
Work on a rota to provide advice and reassurance to patients, relatives, and caregivers in person at the Macmillan Centre.
Who We’re Looking For
Knowledge and Experience (Essential)
- Previous work within health or social care (equivalent to AfC Band 3).
- Experience collaborating in multi-professional teams.
- Proficiency in data handling and IT systems.
- Excellent spoken and written communication abilities.
- Awareness of person-centered care and the broader health/social care environment.
- History of offering patient or carer coaching/education.
Knowledge and Experience (Desirable)
- Familiarity with Macmillan Cancer Support’s role in the UK.
- Experience managing a patient caseload.
- Understanding of national cancer strategies and policies.
- Exposure to common cancer treatments and related medical terminology.
Skills and Abilities

- Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and use initiative.
- Compassionate mindset, especially toward individuals coping with cancer.
- Aptitude for teamwork combined with self-motivation.
- Skill in handling delicate emotional circumstances.

- Any formal certification in coaching or teaching.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
Qualifications and Training
Essential
- GCSEs in English and Mathematics (A–C) or equivalent.
- NVQ4, or NVQ3 coupled with further diploma-level learning.
Desirable
- Willingness to enroll in Macmillan training and development programs.
Additional Details
- Travel: Ability to move between different hospital sites when necessary.
- Professional Conduct: Must be calm, mature, and uphold a professional attitude.
- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS): A DBS check is required to confirm absence of relevant criminal convictions.
