Job Summary
Exciting opportunities are available for experienced Band 3 Maternity Support Workers to join the Community Midwifery Team at the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust. This role is ideal for candidates who are passionate about providing high-quality maternity care and making a positive impact in the community.
As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will support midwives in delivering antenatal and postnatal care to women, working collaboratively to ensure the best outcomes for mothers and babies.
This is a community-based role, so you must have access to a car. The role includes weekend and bank holiday working.
Main Responsibilities
Clinical Duties:
- Perform venepuncture and heel-prick capillary blood sampling, including neonatal screening tests.
- Calculate maternal BMI and obtain urine samples for urinalysis.
- Assist with personal and oral hygiene for mothers.
- Monitor and record maternal vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, and blood pressure), reporting concerns to the midwife.
- Identify and report signs of ill health in mothers and babies.
- Promote skin-to-skin contact between mothers and their babies.
- Process microbiological specimens, such as wound swabs.
Infant Feeding Support:
- Assist women with their chosen method of infant feeding, in line with Unicef and the Baby Friendly Initiative.
- Support mothers in breastfeeding positioning and attachment.
- Assist with hand expression of breast milk and use of breast pumps.
- Demonstrate artificial feeding techniques, including preparing formula feeds and sterilising equipment.
- Educate parents on normal neonatal stool and urine changes.
Newborn Care:
- Weigh newborns, record data, and report concerns to the midwife.
- Monitor skin health and identify potential issues, such as skin rashes.
