Job Summary

Northampton General Hospital is expanding its Health Intelligence team and is seeking a Principal Reporting Analyst to join the Insights & Partnerships section. This role is ideal for candidates with a strong analytical mindset who are passionate about telling stories with data and driving actionable insights.

The organisation has recently implemented a new single data warehouse across University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) and is now focused on leveraging its potential with modern tools and technologies.

This position supports remote and flexible working, with monthly team meetings held on-site and occasional in-person requirements to support stakeholders.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Engage proactively with colleagues and key internal/external contacts to provide accurate and timely reports and bespoke analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and contractual responsibilities while supporting decision-making and performance improvement.
  • Provide insights, analytics, and statistical reporting for operational, performance, and planning decision support.
  • Use MS SQL Business Intelligence tools and Power BI to create complex reports and integrate data from multiple sources.
  • Support the transformation of reporting culture from historical reporting to predictive analytics for better decision-making.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to understand their needs, seek feedback, and enhance analytics delivery.

Person Specification

Education, Training & Qualifications

Essential:
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in a numerate/quantitative discipline.
  • IT, Information, or Statistical Qualification.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
Desirable:
  • Management qualification.
  • Project management certification (PRINCE2, Agile).

Knowledge & Experience

Essential:
  • Strong expertise in health information systems and ability to stay updated with emerging technologies.
  • Proven experience in driving change and fostering a data-driven insight culture.
  • Extensive experience with MS SQL Business Intelligence tools.
  • Proficiency in SQL query writing (complex correlated queries, sub-queries).
  • Working knowledge of SPC charts, technical data models, DAX queries, creating calculations/measures, and integrating data sources in Power BI.
  • Strong experience in data visualization, analytics, and report automation.
Desirable:
  • Experience working in Health Intelligence within the NHS.
  • Working knowledge of R and Python.
  • Experience in Agile methodology.

Skills

Essential:
  • Ability to interpret and apply national guidelines and best practices in Information Management.
  • Proficiency in SQL (including complex queries, SSIS, and SSRS).
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft products.
  • Strong ability to summarize and communicate analytical findings effectively to stakeholders.
