Job Summary
The COGSTACK system, originally developed at King’s College Hospital, enables advanced patient searches and clinical data extraction using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and AI tools. As part of the Genomics AI Network (GAIN), the hospital is now recruiting an AI/NLP Developer to lead the development of next-generation applications leveraging the CogStack platform.
This role involves:
- Enhancing machine learning and NLP tools for clinical data analysis.
- Developing AI-driven approaches for diagnosing rare inheritable diseases.
- Supporting researchers and clinicians with predictive algorithms and advanced data extraction from electronic health records.
You will join a team of bioinformaticians, data scientists, and AI/NLP developers, working at the forefront of AI in healthcare. Your work will contribute to advancing personalized medicine and clinical decision support.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop and support the clinical analytics platform and data infrastructure.
- Enhance the COGSTACK platform to improve NLP-based phenotyping and clinical decision-making.
- Create AI-driven predictive algorithms for analyzing health and genomics data.
- Design an advanced registry for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) to assess infection risks, patient safety, and clinical trial eligibility.
- Ensure data governance, quality management, and regulatory compliance.
- Collaborate with researchers, clinicians, and engineers to develop and implement AI-based solutions.
- Contribute to the mainstreaming of AI applications in clinical practice.
Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
Essential:
- BSc in informatics, computer science, mathematics, statistics, physics, computational biology, artificial intelligence, or data science.
- Postgraduate experience in advanced data analysis/machine learning related to healthcare.
Desirable:
- MSc in AI, data science, or related field.
- Completion of a Scientific Training Programme (or equivalent) in Bioinformatics/Informatics.
Knowledge & Experience
Essential:
- Proficiency in Python and/or R.
- Experience with data science libraries (NumPy, SciPy, scikit-learn, pandas, tidyverse).
- Experience in machine learning and data mining for clinical applications.
- Experience with NLP software (NLTK, SpaCy) and unstructured clinical text processing.
Desirable:
- Experience developing medical device software or applications subject to clinical risk management standards.
- Experience in clinical analytics platforms within academic health science centers.
- Collaboration with academic AI/Machine Learning research teams on healthcare data projects.
Skills & Competencies
Essential:
- Strong computer science, statistics, and data modeling knowledge applied to healthcare.
- Experience collaborating with software engineering and AI development teams.
- Proficiency in Linux, cloud computing, and high-performance computing (HPC) clusters.
- Ability to document procedures and technical specifications for AI/ML projects.
- Strong communication skills, including explaining complex AI topics to non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to manage user expectations and troubleshoot technical issues.
- Strong analytical and data visualization skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team under pressure.
- Experience in quality-managed software development.
