Job Overview
This role is designed for internationally trained midwives currently residing in the UK who have not yet taken their NMC OSCE but have successfully passed their OET (if required) and CBT. Successful candidates will initially work under Band 4 supervision of a UK NMC-registered midwife. Upon achieving NMC registration, they will be promoted to Band 5 under the Agenda for Change model.
The 18-month adaptation programme consists of:
- 6 months as a pre-preceptorship midwife (preparing for OSCE and developing key midwifery skills).
- 12 months as a preceptorship midwife (structured professional development aligned with the Capital Midwife Programme and National Preceptorship Framework).
Candidates must have a valid CBT (at least 6 months before expiry) and, if required by the NMC, a valid English language qualification:
- IELTS: At least 7.0 in reading, listening, and speaking, and at least 6.5 in writing.
- OET: At least Grade B (350+) in reading, listening, and speaking, and Grade C+ (300+) in writing.
Candidates will undergo a written and clinical assessment, followed by a panel interview based on core midwifery knowledge and skills. Sponsorship can be provided if required.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Complete all training and assessments to achieve NMC Registration within the required timeframe.
- Actively engage in the UCLH Preceptorship Programme.
- Work full-time, covering days, nights, weekends, and bank holidays as required.
- Provide midwifery care to women and babies across various maternity settings.
- Assess health and care needs of women and their newborns.
- Develop leadership skills and management experience within the department.
- Participate in the implementation of UCLH’s Midwifery Strategy, including quality improvement, audits, and research-based practice.
- Promote effective communication and a supportive, blame-free environment for staff and patients.
- Train, lead, and manage students and support staff.
Person Specification
Knowledge & Qualifications
Essential:
- Midwifery Programme qualification (or Nursing Programme with midwifery training).
- Valid CBT (at least 6 months before expiry).
- Valid IELTS/OET (if applicable, at least 6 months before expiry).
- Commitment to the 12-month preceptorship programme.
Desirable:
- Neonatal course or relevant experience.
Experience
Essential:
- At least one year of post-registration midwifery experience.
- At least 6 months of labour/delivery room experience, including personally facilitating births within the last 3 years.
- Experience providing midwife-led care during pregnancy, labour, and the postnatal period.
- Clinical experience in UK health and social care settings.
Desirable:
- Experience working within the NHS.
