Job Summary

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is offering an exciting opportunity for a Cancer Care Support Worker to join the Head, Neck, and Thyroid Specialist Nursing Team. This role is based at Southampton General Hospital and focuses on providing personalised care to cancer patients.

The successful candidate will support the co-ordination and tracking of patient pathways, facilitate Patient-Initiated Follow-Up (PIFU) for thyroid cancer, and provide clinical and administrative support for patients throughout their treatment journey.

You will work closely with specialist nurses and the wider multidisciplinary team (MDT), with opportunities for further training and professional development.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and track patient pathways to ensure smooth cancer care management.
  • Facilitate Patient-Initiated Follow-Up (PIFU) for thyroid cancer patients.
  • Provide clinical and administrative support to cancer patients.
  • Collaborate closely with specialist nurses and the wider MDT.
  • Support patients throughout their cancer care journey, ensuring they receive high-quality, personalised care.
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of the Cancer Care Support Worker role.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential:

  • Diploma-level qualification or equivalent experience in a health or social care setting.
  • Evidence of personal development through further study or courses.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of Living With and Beyond Cancer (LWBC) strategies.

Experience

Essential:

  • Experience in administrative and organisational roles.
  • Ability to manage non-routine and complex problems.
  • IT literacy with the ability to work with digital patient records.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in cancer care.
  • Experience working in Health and Wellbeing programmes.
  • Proficiency in hospital computerised patient systems.
  • Experience in audit and data collection.

Skills & Attributes

Essential:

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and apply knowledge effectively.
  • Proven ability to multi-task, prioritise workloads, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to collect and input patient data electronically.
