Job Summary

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a proactive Biomedical Scientist to join its Haemato-Oncology diagnostic laboratory. The facility includes Immunophenotyping, Molecular Genetics, and Histology sections. This full-time role involves working with advanced systems like BD FACSLyric, DAKO Omnis, Thermo Fisher Genexus, and others. Extended working week and weekend duties may apply upon competence. Applicants must be HCPC registered and ideally have completed or be working towards an IBMS Specialist portfolio.

Main Duties of the Job

• Perform diagnostic testing in Flow Cytometry, Histology, Immunocytochemistry, or Molecular Genetics.
• Utilise manual and automated techniques to analyse biological specimens.
• Report and validate results, liaising with medical staff and external organisations.
• Rotate through all three sections and partake in extended hours or weekend duties.

Job Responsibilities

Knowledge and Personal Development

• Engage in CPD and maintain HCPC registration.
• Ensure compliance with UKAS and national standards.
• Develop independent working capabilities and participate in appraisals.

Communication and Relationships

• Liaise with healthcare professionals and external staff effectively.
• Provide specialist advice on specimen requirements and turnaround times.
• Support trainees and newly qualified staff.

Scientific and Technical

• Authorise and validate results across a range of specialist procedures.
• Ensure analytical reliability through quality assessments.
• Use specialist techniques for haematological diagnosis.
• Maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation as needed.

Resources

• Ensure accurate data entry into laboratory systems.
• Coordinate with IT and manage reagent and consumable inventory.

Research and Development

• Evaluate and develop new techniques and equipment.
• Support clinical trials and participate in audits.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Lead in absence of supervisory staff.
• Review SOPs and department policies.
• Train and mentor support staff and trainees.

Weekend Service

• Provide weekend service support to hospitals in the region.
• Manage department safety and liaise with emergency services as needed.
• Handle critical communications and alarm systems.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Essential: BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent, HCPC registration
• Desirable: MSc in Biomedical Sciences

Experience

• Essential: Post-registration NHS lab experience in Chemistry or Haematology
• Desirable: Experience in flow cytometry assay development, histology, or molecular genetics

Knowledge

• Essential: Awareness of health and safety procedures

Skills

• Essential: Time management, communication, numeracy
• Desirable: IT and keyboard proficiency
