Job Overview
An exciting opportunity exists for a highly qualified individual with a Master’s degree in advanced clinical nursing practice and relevant paediatric experience to join the team as an Advanced Paediatric Nurse Practitioner (APNP). This role requires a caring, reliable, and flexible professional with strong clinical and managerial skills, committed to continuous learning. The APNP will play a key role in ensuring that children and young people receive the highest quality care.
The APNP will lead the operation of the children’s observation area (ChObs), managing referrals from GPs, midwives, and the Paediatric Emergency Department. Support for critically ill children will be provided, and assistance will be offered to the nursing and medical teams in delivering care.
Main Duties
- Perform advanced clinical practice autonomously, including assessment, decision-making, and diagnostic skills.
- Independently order and interpret investigations, prescribe medication, and manage paediatric patients.
- Engage in senior leadership duties, such as developing new initiatives, conducting audits, and supporting education and mentorship within the team.
- Collaborate with the Matron and Directorate Manager to ensure compliance with local and national governance agendas for nursing and paediatric care.
Clinical & Professional Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including history and physical examinations, to develop diagnoses and treatment plans.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests, and relay complex information to patients and the multidisciplinary team (MDT).
- Perform advanced medical procedures within the area of expertise, adhering to training and supervision protocols.
- Provide leadership in the care of patients, ensuring high standards of practice, including in critical care situations.
- Take a lead role in multidisciplinary ward rounds, case conferences, and clinical audits.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Prioritize patient caseloads and optimize resources efficiently.
Teaching & Training Responsibilities
- Lead and guide nursing and medical staff, offering advice and support across the team.
- Contribute to the development of clinical training and educational initiatives.
Line Management/Supervisory Responsibilities
- Support senior nursing staff in staff development and performance management, including recruitment and staff appraisals.
Governance & Management Responsibilities
- Provide leadership on evidence-based practice and disseminate best practices to the MDT.
- Contribute to strategic health planning and departmental governance, including risk management and clinical audits.
Safeguarding Responsibilities
- Ensure competence in safeguarding children and implementing child protection procedures, including identifying and reporting abuse and participating in safeguarding meetings.
Financial Responsibility
- Ensure the optimal use of resources and contribute to budget management, identifying potential cost-saving opportunities while maintaining service quality.
Research & Audit
- Participate in departmental audit programs and collaborate on relevant research projects.

Qualifications
Essential
- RSCN/RN Child
- Evidence of continuous professional development
- Degree in Advanced Clinical Nursing
- APLS/PLS certified
- Independent Nurse Prescriber
- Level 3 safeguarding children training
Desirable
- Teaching qualification or equivalent experience
- Management qualification
- APLS instructor
- Master’s degree in advanced clinical nursing practice
Knowledge & Experience

- Significant experience in acute/community paediatrics
