Requirements
- L3 or L4 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology (or equivalent)
- Or interest in apprenticeship with eligibility to work in the UK
- Experience working in mortuary or bereavement settings
- Solid understanding of HTA guidelines, UKAS standards, and Coronial processes
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to support grieving families
- Physically able to handle patient preparation, movement, and viewings
- Full UK driving licence
Salary Details
- Band 3 for apprentices
- Band 4 for L3 diploma holders
- Band 5 for those with an L4 diploma and full competency in bereavement support and APT duties
About the Role

As an Anatomical Pathology Technician, you’ll join a cross-site mortuary and bereavement team working across North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust and South Tees Hospitals. Whether performing forensic post-mortems, preparing patients for viewing, or supporting families with sensitivity and care, your presence makes a difference every day.
If you’re just starting out and meet the apprentice criteria, you’ll get structured training through a progression route that builds your skill and confidence with each step. For qualified technicians, there’s space here to deepen your practice and lead others along the way.
Key Responsibilities
- Support and carry out post-mortem processes with precision and respect
- Prepare patients for family viewings with compassion
- Help families through the bereavement process with empathy
- Ensure legal, ethical, and procedural compliance across all mortuary work
- Contribute to UKAS audits, HTA inspections, and service improvements
- Support junior staff and apprentices where applicable
