The Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) provides fellowships to scholars facing threats in their home countries, enabling them to continue their academic work in safety. Applications are accepted year-round, with fellowships awarded quarterly. To be considered for a March 2025 decision, applicants must submit materials by January 20, 2025.

Application Process

Scholars should email their application materials to srf@iie.org. If an applicant cannot submit materials themselves, a third party may do so on their behalf.

    • Letters should be specific, detailed, and preferably written on official letterhead.
  6. Additional Documents:
    • A copy of your Ph.D. or highest degree.
    • Samples of recent research publications.
    • If applicable, a letter from an institution committed to hosting your fellowship.

Submission Guidelines

Email materials to srf@iie.org. If email is unavailable, send via fax (+1-212-205-6425) or post:

Each applicant must submit original, unique materials specific to their academic background and circumstances. Plagiarized or AI-generated content will disqualify applications. Spouses applying for IIE-SRF must submit separate, complete applications. Applications submitted after one spouse has been awarded a fellowship may not be considered.

Application Review

IIE-SRF evaluates applications based on academic achievements, scholarly contributions, the urgency and credibility of the threats faced, and the quality and completeness of the application.

The review process may include contacting references or independent experts to verify the applicant’s claims. IIE-SRF will not share identifying information without the applicant’s permission.

Due to high demand, not all eligible applicants will receive fellowship support.
