The Advanced Urology Cancer Nurse role is a newly established position designed to lead the nurse-led TP biopsy service. This post will work within a team of nurses possessing specialist skills, knowledge, and experience in urological cancer care, providing expert support and information to patients and their families throughout the cancer pathway. The role involves collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals and specialist cancer providers to manage patients across care pathways. As an expert practitioner, the position entails assessing and initiating treatment as appropriate within agreed protocols.
Main Duties of the Job
- Serve as an expert practitioner by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating specialist nursing care for patients requiring urological investigations and treatments, including a nurse-led TP biopsy service.
- Collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure patients with urological malignancies receive the highest standard of care and support from diagnosis through the cancer pathway.
- Provide expert advice on urological issues to clinical staff.
- Act as a patient advocate, offering expert advice and comprehensive written and verbal information on treatment options to enable informed decisions.
- Establish and maintain coordination of care for patients through diagnosis, planning, treatment, and follow-up, liaising with service providers to ensure a seamless pathway.
- Conduct nurse-led clinics for assessment and cancer follow-up, initiating investigations, recommending treatments, referring to other agencies, or discharging patients as appropriate.
- Autonomously provide ongoing support for a large number of cancer patients with open access to the urology CNS service, including patients awaiting results, newly diagnosed patients, and those with advanced disease.
Working for the Organisation
The urology outpatient service manages cancer and benign patients in outpatient settings, operating nurse and consultant-led procedure and investigation clinics daily. The team provides support and advice to patients and professionals within acute and community settings, working alongside other departments to enhance patient care pathways.
The urology team, based primarily in Paignton, operates across multiple sites. It is a small, friendly team committed to providing excellent patient care. The team emphasizes service improvement and staff development through education and training to help staff achieve their full potential.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- NMC registered with a degree-level qualification in Adult Nursing.
- Experience managing patients with urological health concerns.
- Evidence of continuing professional development.
Desirable Criteria
- Teaching and assessing qualification.
- Non-medical prescribing qualification or willingness to undertake this qualification.
- Ability to perform in-depth urological assessments and implement appropriate, safe care plans.
