About the Team
The National Adult ADHD and Autism Outpatient Clinic is a national tertiary service offering diagnostic assessment and treatment to adults across the UK. Services include:
- Diagnostic assessment for suspected ADHD and/or autism.
- Initiation and titration of ADHD medication.
- Ongoing medication reviews.
Referrals are accepted nationally, subject to individual funding approval from local Clinical Commissioning Groups. Clients often present with comorbid conditions such as anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder.
The multidisciplinary team includes assessment nurses, neurodevelopmental specialists, senior clinical nurse specialists/non-medical prescribers, clinical research workers, consultant psychiatrists, and administrators. The team maintains strong links with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neurosciences (IoPPN), with opportunities for teaching, research, and service evaluation.
Main Duties of the Job
The role involves working in a national specialist service as part of a multidisciplinary team. Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting specialist assessments using diagnostic tools and providing follow-up care for clients with established diagnoses.
- Acting as a non-medical prescriber, initiating and titrating ADHD medication, and managing ongoing treatment.
- Demonstrating advanced clinical decision-making and diagnostic skills in adult neurodevelopmental disorders.
- Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to deliver effective services to clients.

The Trust headquarters is located at Denmark Hill, less than five minutes from the train station (Zone 2). Patient appointments are conducted at the Maudsley Hospital Outpatient Department, with both in-person and virtual appointments available.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Conduct assessments, diagnoses, and risk evaluations using diagnostic tools such as DIVA, ADI, and ADOS.
- Prescribe, initiate, and titrate ADHD medication for patients, ensuring safe and evidence-based care.
- Provide face-to-face and telephone follow-ups for patients.
- Liaise with patients, referrers, Clinical Commissioning Groups, and carers to coordinate care.
- Support administrative staff with clinical queries related to ADHD/ASD referrals.
Communication
- Utilize expert communication skills to provide accurate and sensitive information to patients, families, and carers.
- Liaise effectively with multidisciplinary teams, Clinical Commissioning Groups, and Community Mental Health Teams.
- Maintain accurate records of assessments, interventions, and outcomes.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Qualified Mental Health or Learning Disability Nurse registered with the NMC.
- Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification.
- Educated to master’s level or equivalent with significant post-qualification experience in community-based mental health.
- Experience in diagnosing and managing ADHD and ASD, including complex presentations and comorbidities.
- Demonstrated ability to assess, prescribe, and provide interventions for clients.
- Proven involvement in research, audits, and staff training.
- Excellent communication, IT, and interpersonal skills.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in prescribing for ADHD patients with co-morbidities.
- Involvement in quality improvement initiatives and clinical governance.
- Supervisory experience.
