Job Overview

An opportunity has arisen for Band 6 Neonatal Nurses with ‘QIS’ to join the Neonatal Services at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay. Services are provided from Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) and Furness General Hospital (FGH) as part of the North West Neonatal Operational Delivery Network.

The Neonatal Unit at RLI is a level 2 unit with one intensive care cot, two high dependency cots, and seven special care cots, providing care for babies and families from 27 weeks gestation. Critically ill babies or those born before 27 weeks are stabilized before transfer by the regional transport team. The unit also supports a well-developed transitional care service, enabling special care babies and mothers to stay together on the maternity unit.

At FGH, the Special Care Baby Unit is integrated into the South Lakes Birth Centre and has a cot capacity of four. It provides care from 32 weeks gestation and stabilizes critically ill babies or those born before 32 weeks for transfer by the regional transport team.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will:

  • Demonstrate excellent clinical knowledge, leadership skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, family-centered care.
  • Be reliable, flexible, and exhibit strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Display initiative, motivate others, and maintain a positive team-based attitude.
  • Support ongoing learning, professional development, and embrace positive change.

This role involves leading and coordinating shifts, supporting junior staff and student nurses, and undertaking quality improvement roles in areas of interest. Participation in network specialist interest groups is encouraged to enhance professional development and improve neonatal care.

The unit promotes UNICEF Baby Friendly standards and family-integrated care and is working towards accreditation in both areas. Staff collaborate closely with Maternity and Paediatric teams.

Working for the Organization

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay operates from three main hospitals:

  • Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow
  • Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI)
