Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a neonatal nurse to join the dedicated neonatal research service at Leicester, offering insight and experience in all aspects of study trial delivery. The position is for 15 hours per week, split over two days, and is ideally suited for an experienced neonatal nurse wishing to advance their career.
Candidates should possess or be working towards a neonatal clinical qualification, with evidence of continuing professional development beyond mandatory training. Previous research experience is desirable but not essential. A secondment or clinical job share arrangement may be considered with agreement from the line manager. This post is funded for two years.
Main Duties
- Deliver high-quality research and utilize clinical expertise to provide professional support, guidance, and education to the multi-professional team.
- Act as an advocate for patients and carers within the neonatal research service.
- Maintain high standards of care in line with the NMC Codes of Professional Conduct.
- Uphold Good Clinical Practice (GCP) at all times.
- Demonstrate adaptability and autonomy in the role.
- Work collaboratively with all levels of staff, displaying strong communication, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Be proficient in navigating multiple complex databases while adhering to GDPR requirements.
- Participate in cross-site working and occasional weekend duties.

Detailed Job Description and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Principal Investigators and the research team to provide high-quality research services, offering professional advice, support, guidance, and education.
- Develop a sound understanding of research design methodology and familiarize with the national systems for the approval, management, and monitoring of clinical research within the NHS.
- Assess patient eligibility for neonatal trials and recruit according to GCP guidelines with appropriate training.
- Ensure high standards of care are delivered to research participants and their families in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.
- Assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate care while managing one’s workload and demonstrating initiative.
- Possess excellent IT and database management skills.
- Be competent in administering IV, SC, and oral medications, understanding the significance of blinding in studies involving investigational medicinal products (IMPs).
- Process biological samples as required.
- Display adaptability, flexibility, initiative, and excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Be prepared for cross-site working and occasional weekend shifts.
Person Specification
Clinical Skills and Professional Qualifications
- Essential: Qualified in Specialty/Working towards QIS with a minimum of two years’ experience. Ability to check and administer oral, SC, IM, and IV medications.
- Desirable: Current NLS qualification.
Research Experience
- Essential: Evidence of ongoing professional development.
- Desirable: Current GCP certification, participation in neonatal research, and a willingness to undertake specialist research experience. Understanding of trial management and regulatory requirements.
Communication and Organizational Skills
- Essential: Strong IT and database skills, excellent communication, and the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care autonomously. Ability to provide training and education to the multidisciplinary team.
