Located eight miles east of Manchester, Tameside General Hospital serves a population of approximately 250,000. Its location offers convenient access to central Manchester and the Peak District.
The Blood Sciences Department is fully computerised with electronic links to wards and local GPs. It is well-equipped with advanced laboratory instruments, including Beckman DxH 800 (Haematology), Werfen ACL TOP 350, Ortho Vision (Transfusion), Beckman Automate (pre-analytics), Beckman AU5800 (Biochemistry), Beckman DxI 800 (Immunoassay), Tosoh G11 (HbA1c/ HbV), and Sebia Hydrasys (Electrophoresis). The department is UKAS accredited and recognised as a HCPC-accredited training laboratory.
Main Duties of the Job
- Receive, sort, and book in samples for laboratory investigations. Perform pre-analytical procedures and direct samples to appropriate sections for analysis.
- Prepare samples not processed in-house for off-site referral.
- Perform standard diagnostic biochemical tests following appropriate training.
- Enter results from referral laboratories into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Address queries regarding results, tests, samples, sample handling, issues, and complaints.
- Ensure proper handling of deliveries to the respective department or section.
- Supervise, train, and assess the competence of Medical Laboratory Assistants, acting as a mentor.
- Manage the day-to-day running of the department, including workload and resource allocation.
- Oversee departmental rotas and staffing.
- Assist in developing, documenting, and reviewing departmental policies and procedures.
- Conduct audits and undertake staff Personal Development Reviews.
- Perform return-to-work interviews and monitor staff sickness.
- Monitor stock levels.
- Provide administrative support to the management team and handle data entry.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Essential: Minimum of 3 GCSEs (grade A-C) including Maths and English or equivalent qualifications or experience; NVQ Level 3 or equivalent NHS experience.
Experience
- Essential: Experience working in a pathology specimen reception department; experience supervising others.
Skills and Knowledge
- Essential: Ability to work in all areas of the department, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, knowledge of LIMS and Microsoft IT packages, strong training and presentation skills, organisational abilities, and good manual dexterity.
- Desirable: Knowledge of audit processes and proficiency in using laboratory equipment.
