Job Overview
University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust seeks highly skilled Theatre Registered Nurses and Operating Department Practitioners to join the team. The theatres at Westmorland General Hospital, Kendal, are undergoing upgrades and expansion to provide state-of-the-art facilities. Recruitment is underway to enhance services offered. Positions are available within Scrub, Anaesthetics, and Recovery teams. Surgical specialties include Orthopaedics, Urology, Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Breast Surgery, Maxillofacial, Gynaecology, and ENT.
Main Duties of the Job
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, addressing the entire patient pathway.
- Apply knowledge of NHS structure and regulatory body codes of practice in professional activities.
- Participate in Clinical Governance by auditing practice effectiveness and integrating findings.
- Mentor and supervise junior and unregistered staff, including assessing their competencies.
- Manage shifts or teams in the absence of the Ward/Department Manager.
Working for the Organisation
Services are delivered across three main hospitals: Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, along with community healthcare facilities such as Millom Hospital, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and RLI offer comprehensive General Hospital services, including Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care Units, and Consultant-led specialties.
WGH provides General Hospital services and operates an Urgent Treatment Centre for non-life-threatening conditions. Additionally, all hospitals deliver planned care, such as outpatient services, diagnostics, therapies, day case, and inpatient surgeries. Community services are extended to homes, clinics, GP practices, and community hospitals to support independence, improve health, and manage conditions.

Education and Qualifications
Essential
- 1st Level Registered Nurse or Registered ODP
- Teaching/mentoring qualification, such as D32/D33 assessor’s qualification, or willingness to undertake
- Recognized Anaesthetic Qualification for roles requiring Anaesthetic room duties
Desirable
- Post-registration clinical course relevant to the area
- ECDL or equivalent
Experience
Essential
- Evidence of recent professional development in the relevant clinical specialty
- Previous experience in a similar role
- Experience mentoring junior and unregistered staff
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, including overcoming barriers related to anxiety or disability
