Job Summary
Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an Assistant Psychologist (AP) to join the central and east LD-CAMHS team. This role is ideal for an ambitious individual looking to gain experience in psychological assessment, formulation, and interventions while supporting children, young people, and families.
The LD-CAMHS team works with children and young people (CYP) who have severe or profound learning disabilities. The AP will be under the supervision of a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and will have opportunities to engage in group and individual interventions, systemic approaches, and positive behavioural support. The role also includes service development, research, and audit activities.
The AP will also participate in group supervision, work alongside trainee clinical psychologists, and contribute to the trust-wide AP development group.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Support the Consultant Psychologist in delivering psychological interventions.
- Assist in CBT-adapted interventions, behavioural assessments, formulation, and intervention.
- Conduct structured and non-structured behavioural assessments.
- Contribute to service audits and research using critical analysis skills.
- Assist in writing reports and producing adapted resources.
- Liaise with multi-agency professionals supporting CYP and families.
- Adhere to professional guidelines and Trust values.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- A good honours degree in Psychology (2.1 or above).
- Eligibility for Graduate Membership of the British Psychological Society (BPS).
- Willingness to undertake breakaway training or equivalent upon appointment.
Desirable:
- Advanced keyboard skills.
- Additional academic qualifications at Masters or Doctorate level.
Knowledge & Expertise
Essential:
- Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information with empathy.
- Ability to analyze and compare a range of options in decision-making.
- Skills in assessing children and young people individually and in group settings.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
Desirable:
- Experience using spreadsheet and database software (Excel, Access, etc.).
- Published work in peer-reviewed, academic, or professional journals.
Experience
Essential:
- Relevant work experience with children, young people, or adults with learning disabilities and/or autism.
Desirable:
- Experience working with adolescents with learning disabilities or mental health problems.
- Aspiration to pursue Clinical Psychology Training (DClinPsy).
