Job Summary

An opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Psychologist to join the North Wales Adolescent Service (NWAS), which provides specialist mental health support at Tier 4 level for young people aged 12-18.

The role involves working within a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and supporting a Clinical Psychologist in delivering assessments, formulations, and evidence-based interventions for young people. Additional responsibilities include supporting audits, research, and training activities within the Central Child Psychology Team.

Welsh language skills are desirable but not essential. Welsh and English speakers are equally encouraged to apply.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work under the supervision of a Clinical Psychologist to support the delivery of psychological assessments, formulations, and interventions.
  • Assist the MDT in indirect interventions for young people with complex mental health difficulties who may struggle to engage directly.
  • Support audit, research, and training activities to improve service quality.
  • Work closely with the Central Child Psychology Team, attending regular meetings for peer support and professional development.
  • Assist with data collection, analysis, and report preparation for research and service evaluations.
  • Provide emotional support and therapeutic interventions to young people in collaboration with the wider team.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications & Knowledge

  • Good Honours Degree in Psychology.
  • Eligibility for Graduate Membership of the British Psychological Society (BPS).
  • Knowledge of lifespan developmental psychology and models of psychopathology.
  • Understanding of research design and methodology.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Attendance at skills development courses or training related to psychology or mental health.

Essential Experience

  • Experience working with clients in a clinical, social care, or educational setting.
  • Experience in therapeutic work or developmental assessments.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working with children, young people, and families in multiple settings.
  • Experience in an inpatient mental health setting.

Essential Skills & Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to convey sensitive information with empathy and reassurance.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) under supervision.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail in data collection and test administration.
  • Basic IT skills for data entry and report writing.
