Requirements

• Working towards or holding a Level 4 science qualification such as BSc, HND, or Foundation degree
• OR relevant laboratory experience with NVQ4 or equivalent qualification
• Strong understanding of basic laboratory practices and confidentiality
• Experience in an NHS or biomedical lab setting
• Ready to follow safety procedures and contribute to a quality-driven environment

Salary Details

This role pays a Band 4 salary, which sits between 27,485 and 30,162 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.

About the Role

This isn’t just about pipettes and samples. It’s about making sure doctors get the right results at the right time to treat patients effectively. You’ll work under the guidance of Biomedical Scientists, carrying out key lab tasks that directly influence patient diagnosis and treatment.

The job mixes hands-on lab work with administrative and quality control responsibilities. You’ll support day-to-day operations, ensure procedures follow UKAS standards, and help maintain a safe and efficient lab environment. You’ll also take on some supervision duties and work independently after training.

It’s a brilliant route for someone who wants to build a career in clinical science without needing immediate registration.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out biological sample analysis as part of patient diagnosis and monitoring
• Support and supervise PSWs where required in line with departmental needs
• Manage operational and admin tasks in the lab to keep things flowing
• Follow all Standard Operating Procedures and lab safety protocols
• Prioritise tasks based on urgency and guidance from senior staff
• Report incidents and participate in lab quality control and improvement
• Maintain professional conduct, patient confidentiality, and data security
• Uphold the image of the South of Tyne and Wear Pathology Services

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This role requires a DBS check as per the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975. It’s part of keeping patients and staff safe.
