In the evolving landscape of AI integration, Google is extending its Bard chatbot to Google Messages, allowing users to seamlessly initiate RCS chats with Bard directly from the “New conversation” screen. Over the past year, Google has been progressively integrating Bard across various apps and services within Google Workspace. The recent beta version of the Messages app sheds light on Bard’s potential functionalities, positioning it as a versatile assistant within the messaging platform.

In this upcoming feature, initiating a conversation with Bard resembles a standalone interaction, distinct from regular chats. The chat is marked with the Bard logo and name, creating an experience akin to conversing with a virtual “penpal.” The code snippets suggest that Bard is poised to become an all-encompassing helper within Google Messages, offering capabilities such as drafting messages, image recognition, language translation, and personalized book recommendations, leveraging insights from location and past conversations.

When Bard formulates a response, users can interact with it through actions like giving a thumbs up or down with a long press. Additional functionalities include copying, forwarding, and starring the response. However, it’s crucial to note that unlike conventional RCS chats, Bard chats lack end-to-end encryption. Google emphasizes that these conversations contribute to enhancing Bard’s capabilities, and trained reviewers may analyze them.

For users prioritizing privacy, it’s advisable to refrain from sharing confidential or sensitive information through Bard. Google assures that the data reviewed is separated from the user’s account and retained for a maximum of three years. Bard chats and associated data are stored for 18 months, even if Bard activity is disabled, with the data persisting for an additional 72 hours after deactivation. Users have the option to manually manage or delete this data.

While the feature is not yet live in the app, its potential implications on tools like Smart Reply are significant. As Bard transcends from being merely a machine-learning model for quick responses to a full-fledged AI chatbot, it introduces a new dimension to messaging app interactions. However, users might anticipate a learning curve, potentially involving sharing personal information and text history to refine Bard’s responsiveness and alignment with individual communication styles. The evolution of Google Messages with Bard integration holds promise, offering users an advanced and personalized messaging experience.
