Job Summary

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Biomedical Scientist to join the Cellular Pathology and Mortuary Service. The role involves conducting routine investigations, processing and analyzing diagnostic test results, and ensuring service quality. The successful candidate will rotate through different sections of the department, contribute to laboratory audits, and support training and development of junior staff.

Health and safety compliance, quality management, and continuous professional development are key aspects of the role. Further study and career progression will be encouraged.

Main Duties

  • Perform specialist laboratory techniques, including microtomy, embedding, frozen sections, immunohistochemistry, andrology, and non-gynae cytology
  • Participate in block-checking, digital slide quality control, and troubleshooting
  • Support quality management systems and conduct laboratory and clinical audits
  • Provide supervision and training for junior staff, including MLAs, associate practitioners, and trainee biomedical scientists
  • Rotate through different sections within the department, contributing to service improvement and maintaining high standards of patient care

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential:

  • HCPC state registration
  • Degree in Biomedical Science
  • IBMS Specialist Postgraduate Portfolio in Cellular Pathology, MSc in Cellular Pathology, or equivalent

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate qualifications related to cellular pathology

Knowledge, Experience & Expertise

Essential:

  • Recent post-registration experience in cellular pathology
  • Experience supervising and training staff, including MLAs, associate practitioners, and trainee biomedical scientists
  • Experience in laboratory and clinical audits
  • Familiarity with UKAS accreditation and Human Tissue Authority (HTA) standards
  • Strong organizational and time management skills

Desirable:

  • Experience in andrology and non-gynae cytology
  • Leadership experience within a laboratory setting
  • Specialist training or experience from a reference laboratory, external courses, or examinations

Communication & Management Skills

Essential:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage workload efficiently
