Requirements
- Science degree or equivalent qualification
- Hands-on experience handling biological samples in clinical or research settings
- Skilled in using laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, biosafety cabinets and pipettes
- Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures and regulatory compliance
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills with an eye for detail
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualification in biological science
- Previous NHS or clinical trials experience
- Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice and Human Tissue legislation
- Phlebotomy skills or experience with EPIC systems
Salary Details
This role is offered at Band 6 on the Agenda for Change pay scale, with a salary range of £38,682 to £46,580 per year, pro rata for part time hours.
About the Role
The Biosample Practitioner ensures the safe collection, processing and tracking of biological samples used in clinical trials and research studies. Working with research nurses, laboratory teams and couriers, this person safeguards the integrity of samples that underpin life-changing discoveries.
They will oversee sample handling areas and equipment, making sure freezers, fridges and safety cabinets meet the highest standards. Beyond day-to-day operations, they will write and review Standard Operating Procedures to keep processes sharp and compliant. By training colleagues and managing coordinators, they play a leading role in raising standards and supporting research that directly impacts patient care.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate sample-related activities to support clinical trials and research studies
- Train staff and ensure best practice in sample collection and processing
- Oversee daily operations of coordinators and technicians to maintain efficiency
- Manage freezers, fridges and equipment vital for safe storage of biological samples
- Write, review and update SOPs to ensure compliance and consistency
- Liaise with couriers, agencies and research teams to keep sample flows running smoothly
- Maintain accurate documentation and conduct environmental checks to uphold quality standards
