Job Overview
The CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) Assistant Practitioner role offers an exciting opportunity to support clinical practitioners in providing high-quality care to children and young people referred to the service. This role is part of the Single Point of Access (SPOA) service, and the post holder will work flexibly, continuously developing their skills under the supervision of a registered professional. Over time, the role will evolve through the acquisition of further knowledge and competencies, enabling the Assistant Practitioner to provide comprehensive support for mental health services.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
As a CAMHS Assistant Practitioner, you will:

  • Delegated Tasks: Work under the guidance of regulated healthcare professionals, assisting with assessments of patient needs and responding to those needs in a limited capacity within clearly defined boundaries.
  • Collaborative Work: Collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team to provide evidence-based care to children, young people, and their families.
  • Referral Triage: Contribute to the triage of new referrals, including assessing risks and identifying safeguarding concerns.
  • Communication: Respond to queries from service users and other professionals, ensuring clear and effective communication.
  • Assessment and Care Planning: Undertake mental health assessments, including risk assessments, and contribute to care planning and safety planning for young people.
  • Support and Supervision: Provide guidance to support workers and other staff under supervision.
  • Training and Development: Participate in training and development initiatives, both for personal growth and supporting colleagues.

Person Specification
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications, experience, and skills:

Qualifications

  • Essential:
  • Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care or NVQ 2 in a health-related area (or equivalent).
  • GCSE Maths and English Grade 4 or above (or equivalent).
  • Desirable:
  • NVQ 3 in a health-related area or equivalent.

Knowledge

  • Essential:
  • Understanding of the Assistant Practitioner role within a Single Point of Access environment.
  • Knowledge of mental health and emotional wellbeing issues affecting children and young people.
  • Familiarity with safeguarding procedures for children and vulnerable adults.
  • Desirable:
  • Presentation, teaching, and training skills in mental health.
  • Knowledge of child development.

Experience

  • Essential:
  • Experience working with children and young people with mental health conditions.
  • Experience working with children and young people with neurodiversity.
  • Experience of working autonomously and using initiative.
  • Experience of working with risk and following reporting procedures.
  • Desirable:
  • Experience in a mental health team.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary team settings.
  • Experience providing individual and group interventions to children, young people, and families.

Skills and Abilities
