Job Summary

Wirral University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a Cancer Care Coordinator to join its Lung Cancer Nursing Team. This role is crucial in ensuring that cancer patients receive timely and efficient treatment by coordinating their appointments, investigations, and treatments. The position involves liaising with clinical and administrative teams both within the Trust and external tertiary centres.

This role also requires direct communication with patients and families during challenging times, making empathy and patience essential attributes. Additionally, the role includes administrative support, data management, and compliance with cancer care standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the patient cancer pathway, ensuring timely access to treatment
  • Act as a liaison between clinical teams, administrative teams, and tertiary centres
  • Provide support and communication to cancer patients and their families
  • Ensure compliance with clinical guidelines, policies, and procedures
  • Organise and manage the day-to-day operations of the service, including scheduling meetings and responding to email enquiries
  • Participate in public awareness events and represent the service at cancer conferences
  • Maintain and update patient records in relevant databases for audit and analytical purposes
  • Work collaboratively with other Cancer Care Coordinators across the region to implement best practices
  • Facilitate smooth transitions of care between services

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • NVQ Level 3/4 in Health or Social Care or equivalent experience
  • 5 GCSEs (Grade C or above, including Maths & English)
  • Excellent computer and keyboard skills, proficient in MS Office (ECDL or equivalent)
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a health or social care setting
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with cancer patients
  • Awareness of cancer patient needs and experience supporting individuals in need

Desirable:

  • Communication skills training or counselling qualification
  • Basic Cancer Course or Foundation Degree/Diploma level training
  • Experience coordinating patient workloads
  • Previous experience as a Senior Support Worker
  • Knowledge of Macmillan Cancer Support and national cancer policies
  • Understanding of cancer treatments, interventions, and medical terminology
