About the Role
This is more than a support job. It’s about helping people feel human again in the middle of a cancer diagnosis. You’ll join a trusted team of support workers and work closely with Clinical Nurse Specialists to guide patients across their care pathway. Based mainly at The Royal Sussex County Hospital, with occasional travel to nearby UHSussex sites, you’ll help patients navigate both the clinical and non-clinical challenges that come with cancer.
From triaging helpline calls to supporting care planning, you’ll be the calm in someone’s storm. Whether it’s helping them fill out forms or understanding what happens next, your guidance can make their world feel just a little less overwhelming.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate care and act as a single access point for patients needing urgent support
- Triage calls on the CNS helpline and offer guidance, signposting, or onward referrals
- Support Holistic Needs Assessments and care planning through face-to-face clinics
- Attend clinics and cancer centres to support information-sharing and follow-ups
- Connect patients to wider health and social care resources when needed
- Encourage self-management and healthy living habits in cancer recovery
- Act as an advocate and barrier-breaker in moments where care gets stuck
- Promote awareness of Macmillan resources and identify as a Macmillan professional
- Contribute to the improvement of care pathways through collaboration and feedback
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
This position requires a DBS check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975. This helps ensure safety across patient-facing roles.
