Job Overview

The Carer Peer Support Worker (CPW) will collaborate with the social work team, family service, and lived experience team, working closely with inpatient wards, community teams, and the Friends and Family group. This role involves supporting carers, friends, and family members of service users, offering guidance and sharing lived experiences to promote hope and recovery.

As a key member of the multi-disciplinary team, the CPW will work to empower carers, promote information sharing, and help individuals reconnect with their communities. The role also includes advocacy, attending meetings, and supporting the development of carer representation across the Trust.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one and group support to carers, friends, and family members.
  • Work alongside healthcare teams (social workers, lived experience teams, nurses, occupational therapists, and psychologists) to develop carer representation and voice.
  • Attend and contribute to the Friends and Family group, facilitating meetings and supporting arrangements.
  • Share personal lived experiences to inspire hope and encourage carer involvement in the recovery process.
  • Support information sharing to promote self-determination and social inclusion.
  • Act as an ambassador for the Recovery approach both within the Trust and with external agencies.
  • Participate in Trust-wide meetings and contribute to carer peer support development.
  • Work under the professional supervision of a Social Worker and deliver peer support interventions.
  • Assist in care planning processes as required by the service.

Person Specification

Lived Experience

Essential:

  • Personal experience of caring for a friend or relative who was a formal mental health patient.

Desirable:

  • Experience of caring for a forensic mental health patient.

Communication Skills

Essential:

  • Competent verbal and written communication skills.

Desirable:

  • Exceptional communication skills and experience engaging with diverse audiences.

Organisational Skills

Essential:

  • Demonstrated ability to self-motivate and manage workload independently.

Desirable:

  • Experience in independent working and coordinating support activities.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to work flexibly as needed to support carers and service users.
  • Commitment to confidentiality and safeguarding of patient data.
  • Subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check due to the nature of the role.
