Requirements

  • 18 months post-registration experience with preceptorship signed off
  • Registration as RNMH, RNLD or equivalent with NMC or relevant UK professional body
  • Passion for person-centred care and evidence-based practice
  • Experience in community mental health or multi-agency settings
  • Understanding of the Offender Health pathway
  • Able to complete health and risk assessments independently
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Comfortable working in a secure environment
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and inclusive care
  • Teaching, clinical supervision or mentoring qualifications (or willing to obtain)
  • Literacy, numeracy, and IT skills to at least Level 2

Salary Details

This Band 5/6 developmental role offers a starting salary from £29,970 up to £44,962, depending on qualifications and experience, following the NHS Agenda for Change pay scheme.

About the Role

This is not your typical nursing role. Working within HMP Deerbolt, you’ll become part of a specialist multi-disciplinary team delivering care in a complex and rewarding setting.

Whether you’re stepping into your first clinical lead post or already operating at a Band 6 level, you’ll have the chance to shape and deliver real change—because in prison mental health, every skill you bring counts.

The role is hands-on and varied. You’ll carry out psychiatric assessments, develop tailored care plans, and support recovery in a fast-paced setting. No two days are the same. You’ll be collaborating with external services, navigating the criminal justice system, and helping individuals build a better path forward.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out mental health assessments and formulate care plans
  • Deliver interventions based on evidence-based practice
  • Support planning for discharge and transitions to community care
  • Provide supervision and support to junior staff and students
  • Coordinate with external agencies and internal teams for seamless care
  • Participate in quality improvement and clinical governance
  • Contribute to risk assessment and crisis management planning
  • Help shape mental health provision within the prison system
