Requirements

  • HNC or HND in mechanical or electromechanical engineering
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience via an apprenticeship or structured training
  • Eligible or working toward Clinical Technologist registration with RCT or AHCS
  • Full valid UK driving licence
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office and 2D or 3D CAD software
  • Strong organisational and communication skills
  • Comfortable managing risk and adapting technical equipment for complex needs

Salary Details

This Band 5 post offers a salary range of £31,049 to £37,796 per annum under the Agenda for Change pay scheme

About the Role

This is a meaningful engineering role where your technical skills directly improve people’s lives. You’ll be part of the Regional Rehabilitation Engineering Mobility Service (RREMS), delivering custom mobility solutions for patients across the North East and North Cumbria. From your base at the Freeman Hospital and James Cook University Hospital, you’ll support wheelchair users in clinical and community settings.

This role’s perfect for someone who loves applying engineering in real-world ways. Whether it’s modifying powered wheelchairs or conducting accessibility assessments, your input helps people gain independence and dignity. You’ll also take part in incident investigations, train caregivers and staff, and even shape future mobility products through R&D work.

It’s more than technical work. It’s about restoring freedom.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, adapt, and deliver bespoke wheelchair and posture equipment across sites
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement modifications based on patient needs
  • Oversee the region’s wheelchair repair and refurbishment performance
  • Train healthcare staff and family members in safe use of provided equipment
  • Use CAD tools to support design and development of mobility products
  • Investigate medical equipment incidents and document safety findings
  • Help refine wheelchair standards and processes to ensure safety and quality
  • Drive to multiple locations daily to provide hands-on support
