Job Summary
The Worthing Neighbourhood Mental Health Team is seeking an experienced Mental Health Practitioner (Mental Health Nurse, Occupational Therapist, or Social Worker) to take on a dedicated full-time duty worker role. Previously, this role was shared among care coordinators, but following a successful trial, it is now being established as a permanent, standalone position within the team.
The role involves working in a supportive multi-disciplinary setting, responding to urgent mental health needs and ensuring patient safety. The post holder will work Monday to Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM, and must have access to a suitable vehicle for business purposes.
The team is warm, friendly, and highly supportive, working together to provide the best possible mental health care to service users.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Safety and Crisis Management
- Work collaboratively with patients, carers, and other team members to ensure patient safety.
- Identify and respond to potential risks of harm, abuse, or neglect, taking appropriate protective measures.
- Conduct urgent and priority mental health assessments, including risk assessments.
- Make critical decisions and coordinate responses in crisis situations.
- Manage complex cases when the primary Care Coordinator or Lead Professional is unavailable.
- Provide support for Intensive Home-Based Treatment when necessary.
Collaboration and Liaison
- Work closely with police, A&E departments, and other emergency services when required.
- Support the team in delivering various mental health interventions based on care plans.
- Participate in setting quality standards and ensuring a consistent approach to patient care.
- Assist with specialist assessments, including those related to:
- Mental Capacity Act 2005
- Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS)
- Safeguarding Adults (s42 Care Act) and Making Safeguarding Personal
Administrative and Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain detailed and accurate patient records through both verbal and written reports.
- Supervise and support team members in delivering high standards of care.
- Uphold professional standards and adhere to clinical governance requirements.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- Registered Nurse / Health Professional with current registration in a relevant field (e.g., Mental Health Nursing, Occupational Therapy, or Social Work).
- Completion of a Mentorship Course / ENB or equivalent professional qualification.
- Evidence of continuous professional development.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential:
- Significant post-qualification experience in mental health or neurodevelopmental care.
- Experience working with patients with complex mental health needs.
- Prior experience supervising staff and providing clinical interventions.
- Skilled in conducting clinical assessments, including risk assessments.
- Experience in working with multiple agencies and statutory/non-statutory services.
- Familiarity with the Care Programme Approach (CPA) and clinical governance principles.
- Previous experience working in a community mental health setting.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
This role is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to assess any previous criminal convictions.
