Requirements

  • IMI Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent
  • Strong diagnostic skills – ability to interpret vehicle data and fix issues fast
  • IT literacy – use of diagnostic software and workshop systems
  • Hands-on mechanical knowledge – solid experience in vehicle systems
  • C1 or D1 licence – or a commitment to obtain it within 6 months (fully funded by EEAST)
  • Experience with business vehicle fleets – not just family cars
  • Safety-focused mindset – specialist understanding of repair practices

Desirable but not essential:

  • IRTE or IMI membership
  • IMI Level 3 Electric/Hybrid Vehicle certification
  • Auto electrical skills

Salary Details

This NHS Band 5 role includes all standard enhancements for extra hours, plus progression potential. Overtime is paid at a higher rate if approved in advance.

About the Role

This is where passion meets performance. Working out of Stevenage, the Diagnostic Vehicle Technician will take charge of essential repairs, routine servicing, and fault diagnostics across emergency fleet vehicles. It’s a hands-on role with real responsibility – think high-pressure, fast-turnaround work that keeps ambulances safe and running on time.

You’ll be using modern diagnostic tools, tackling both mechanical and electrical issues, and making the call when to repair or replace. Sound good so far?

This role includes participation in the Trust’s 24-hour breakdown service on a rota basis. That means occasional out-of-hours call-outs, but don’t worry, you’ll get time off in return.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out vehicle servicing and repairs to NHS MOT standards
  • Use diagnostics to identify faults and fix issues efficiently
  • Maintain accurate service records and job cards
  • Work within tight turnaround times while prioritising safety
  • Support colleagues and share expertise in a team environment
  • Be on-call occasionally, with appropriate rest periods
