Job Summary
An exciting opportunity is available to join the South Wales team as a Healthcare Support Worker (Retinal Photographer), delivering Diabetic Eye Screening Wales (DESW) clinics. This role involves traveling between screening sites, with frequent overnight stays to support clinics across Mid Wales.
The successful candidate will receive training as a retinal screener and must be committed to high-quality, patient-centered care. The ability to transport screening equipment in a Diabetic Eye Screening vehicle is essential.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Guide patients through screening appointments while ensuring accurate record-keeping.
- Administer eye drops and monitor pupil dilation within designated timeframes.
- Capture high-quality digital retinal images using specialized cameras.
- Follow all Diabetic Eye Screening Wales (DESW) protocols and standard operating procedures.
- Drive a Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) to clinic venues primarily in South Wales and Powys, with occasional travel to other areas in Wales.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- GCSEs (English and Mathematics desirable) or equivalent HND/NVQ Level 2 in Healthcare, Photography, or a related subject, or relevant equivalent experience.
- Commitment to continuous learning and CPD (Continuing Professional Development).
- A good standard of general education.
Desirable:
- Diploma in Health Screening.
- Professional qualification in Medical Photography.
Experience & Knowledge
Essential:
- Experience in Health or Social Care.
- Multi-disciplinary team working.
- Direct patient contact or customer-facing experience.
- Understanding of the importance of following processes and guidelines.
- Interest in photography and screening services.
Desirable:
- Practical photography experience.
- Knowledge of ophthalmology, diabetic eye disease, and anatomy of the eye.
- Experience working with quality systems and processes.
- Understanding of diabetes and its impact on eye health.
Skills & Attributes
Essential:
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Computer literacy, especially with Windows-based applications.
- Ability to work under pressure with high attention to detail.
- Good level of manual dexterity.
- Sympathetic and professional patient interaction.
- Responsible attitude towards patient confidentiality.
Desirable:
- Awareness of manual handling guidelines.
- Understanding of importing/exporting data via networks.
Other Requirements
Essential:
- Normal color vision, required for retinal image assessment using specialized software.
- Full UK driving license, with the ability to drive a Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) daily (provided by Public Health Wales).
- Flexible approach to working hours and willingness to travel across Wales with overnight stays.
Desirable:
- Experience driving Light Goods Vehicles (LGV).
- Ability to speak Welsh.
Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) Check
This role requires a DBS check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
