Requirements
- FdA in Healthcare Play Specialism or equivalent qualification such as HPSC, HPSEB, or Child Life Specialist
- Registered with Society of Health Play Specialists or Certified Child Life Specialist
- Good command of English and Maths, minimum 5 GCSEs
- Strong understanding of therapeutic play and child development
- Experience working with children in healthcare settings
- Ability to plan and deliver creative play programmes to ease hospital anxieties
- Good communication and organisational skills
- Willingness to reflect on your practice and work closely with the team
- Basic knowledge of health legislation and confidentiality
- Flexibility and eagerness to learn new ideas
Salary Details
- Annual pay range from £31,944 to £34,937 based on experience and qualifications
- Part time contract, 30 hours per week allowing for work-life balance
About the Role
This Health Play Specialist role is all about making a real difference to children’s hospital experience at GOSH. You will work closely with young patients to reduce their fear and anxiety through therapeutic play. It’s not just about play — it’s about supporting their wellbeing and helping them cooperate during treatments. You’ll manage your own caseload, design tailored play programmes, and communicate clearly with patients, families, and the clinical team. This role fits perfectly if you want to bring creativity and compassion to the frontline of healthcare, knowing your work shapes positive outcomes every day.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out therapeutic assessments and design personalised play plans that support children’s care
- Use play to prepare patients for procedures and help distract and calm them during treatments
- Monitor how well your interventions work and adjust plans to get the best outcomes
- Work closely with medical teams to align play with overall care plans
- Support your colleagues in the Play Team and share knowledge across wards
- Reflect on your practice and refer issues to your manager when needed
- Maintain accurate records of play interventions and patient progress
- Ensure a safe, respectful environment where children feel heard and supported
