Job Summary

Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible Support Worker to join its Sexual Health Team. The role focuses on providing a supportive, friendly, and non-judgemental environment for patients, their families, and friends. The Support Worker will be a key part of the multi-disciplinary HIV outpatient team, delivering high-quality clinical and non-clinical care in line with Trust policies and values.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain a sound knowledge base of HIV and related issues to support the wider multi-disciplinary team (MDT).
  • Monitor and evaluate patient care, keeping secure written and statistical records and providing reports as needed.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment in accordance with infection control and risk policies.
  • Use medical equipment safely and competently, reporting faults promptly.
  • Assist in patient examination and specimen collection, ensuring accurate storage and processing.
  • Provide care with respect for patients’ customs, culture, and preferences.
  • Perform pregnancy tests, urinalysis, peak flow, phlebotomy, and vital sign recording competently.
  • Calculate BMI, FRAX, and CVD risk using appropriate tools based on national guidelines.
  • Perform INSTI (HIV point-of-care) tests for clients.

Person Specification

Education & Qualifications

Essential:

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience

Desirable:

  • Diploma in a health-related field (e.g., Health Promotion)
  • Care Certificate

Skills & Abilities

Essential:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Phlebotomy skills (with training)
  • IT and data management skills

Desirable:

  • Competency in Point-of-Care HIV testing
  • Previous data input experience

Experience

Essential:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of HIV
  • Competence in recording and monitoring patient vital observations

Desirable:

  • Experience in asymptomatic STI screening
  • Previous experience working within the NHS

Knowledge

Essential:

  • Understanding of confidentiality issues
  • Awareness of safeguarding
  • Ability to provide individualised care under supervision

Desirable:

  • Experience in safeguarding vulnerable adults and children

Other Requirements

Essential:

  • Demonstration of Trust Values

Desirable:

  • Experience in service innovation or development
