Job Summary

Public Health Wales is seeking an IT Support Specialist to join the Desktop and Devices team. The role involves supporting Trust programmes through the preparation, configuration, and deployment of IT hardware and software. The successful candidate will assist in maintaining the IT estate and infrastructure, resolve 2nd line support escalations, and contribute to large-scale hardware and software rollouts. The position also includes involvement in software, hardware, and infrastructure change projects across the organisation.

This role offers an opportunity to develop technical skills within a fast-paced and collaborative Digital team. The ideal candidate will be proactive, technically skilled, and capable of delivering high-quality IT support under pressure.

Main Duties

  • Provide technical support within the Desktop and Devices team, ensuring seamless IT functionality for end-users
  • Deploy and maintain IT hardware, including PCs and associated software
  • Manage escalated IT support calls and technical issues
  • Lead and contribute to IT deployment projects and infrastructure improvements
  • Support wider IT initiatives, particularly in desktop deployment optimisation
  • Document system administration procedures and policies
  • Collaborate with teams across the organisation to enhance IT service delivery

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Literate and numerate
  • Degree in an IT-related subject or equivalent qualifications/experience

Desirable:

  • Professional IT qualification such as MCP or CCNA
  • Completion of relevant IT training courses

Experience

Essential:

  • Experience in a Windows-based PC TCP/IP network environment in an IT support role
  • Experience deploying Windows servers, desktops, and laptops
  • Knowledge of Windows Active Directory
  • Experience working with Unified Endpoint Management Systems
  • IT security experience

Desirable:

  • IT user training experience
  • NHS, healthcare, or public sector experience
  • Experience managing small IM&T projects
  • Experience configuring modern telephony systems
  • Familiarity with VMWare ESX server infrastructure

  • Strong knowledge of Windows client and server operating systems, TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, and networking
  • Theoretical understanding of Windows Active Directory, Group Policies, Exchange, and Microsoft Office
  • Awareness of data protection legislation and IT security concepts

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of IT security threat management and incident response
  • Experience in IT budget preparation and procurement
  • Knowledge of CCNA, MCP, ITIL, or PRINCE2 methodologies
  • Experience with Microsoft SCCM, WSUS, SQL Server
  • Understanding of VMWare ESX server infrastructure
