About the Bodleian Libraries
The Bodleian Libraries, part of the University of Oxford, house a prestigious collection of materials focused on Art, Archaeology, and the Ancient World. The Bodleian Art, Archaeology & Ancient World Library, along with the Taylor Institution and Nizami Ganjavi Libraries, forms Section 3 of the Bodleian Libraries’ Humanities Libraries. These libraries work together to offer a wide range of services and may require occasional support across locations.

Job Description
The Bodleian Libraries seek two part-time Evening & Weekend Library Assistants for their Reader Services team. These permanent roles involve staffing the Issue Desk and Lodge, assisting readers, managing the University’s online library catalogue (SOLO), and operating the automated library management system (Alma). Other duties include fetching and re-shelving books, scanning texts for the Scan & Deliver service, and assisting with book transfers to the offsite storage facility.

Work Patterns

  • Pattern 1: Tuesdays (17:00-21:15) & Sundays (10:45-19:15) – 12.25 hours per week (0.3356 FTE)
  • Pattern 2: Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (17:00-21:15) – 12.75 hours per week (0.3493 FTE)

These roles require physical tasks such as lifting boxes, pushing trolleys, and climbing ladders to access and re-shelve materials.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong customer focus with effective communication skills
  • Ability to work confidently and courteously in a team
  • Good IT literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Care and accuracy in performing routine library tasks
  • Physical ability to handle lifting, carrying, and shelving books
