About the Role
The role of a Maintenance Assistant working Shifts is an exciting opportunity within the Estates Department at West Cumberland Hospital. As part of a 5-person shift rota, you will be responsible for undertaking maintenance, repairs, minor improvement, and capital work across the Trust, ensuring that all tasks meet the safety standards and procedures required.

Shifts operate on a 5-weekly rotation, covering first shifts (06:00-13:00), back shifts (13:00-20:30), night shifts (20:30-06:00), with one week off every five weeks. You will also provide cover for your colleagues during their annual leave or sickness absence.

The post holder will work unsupervised outside of normal hours, handling tasks such as power distribution, lighting systems, plumbing, emergency joinery, and responding to urgent calls through radio and pager systems. Emergency support will be available from an on-call engineer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out maintenance and repair work on electrical, mechanical, and sanitary systems
  • Respond to maintenance requests and prioritize tasks based on urgency
  • Work on systems such as standby generators, nurse call systems, fire detection systems, air conditioning plants, and medical gas systems
  • Handle emergency joinery works, such as repairing windows and doors
  • Unblock and repair ward bedpan disposal machines

Requirements

  • Experience in building services or maintenance environment
  • Knowledge of health and safety in the work environment
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Able to work unsupervised and within a team
  • Full driving license for operating vehicles such as snow ploughs

Qualifications

  • GCSE grade C or above in Mathematics and English, or equivalent
  • Basic Health and Safety training

Desirable Skills

  • NVQ 2 in building maintenance or similar qualification
  • Experience with Portable Appliance Testing and minor repairs
