Job Description
ILS Case Management is seeking a patient and caring Male Buddy to support their client, a young adult born in 2007 with Athetoid Cerebral Palsy. The client is profoundly deaf, uses cochlear implants, and communicates through spoken English. He is passionate about drama, music, and pursuing acting as a career. He attends sixth form, taking drama, film studies, and maths.

The support worker will assist the client in becoming more independent and engaging in his interests and hobbies, which include going to the gym, cinema, theatre, music gigs, and exploring new activities like horse riding, skiing, archery, and pottery. The role involves providing support both within the local community in Swindond and further afield in the UK.

Responsibilities include:

  • Helping the client mobilize and transfer around the family home
  • Assisting with personal care tasks as needed
  • Supporting the client’s interests and activities
  • Working effectively with a multidisciplinary therapy team
  • Driving the client in their Wheelchair Adapted Vehicle (WAV)
  • Implementing therapy programs and using specialist equipment

Skills and Qualifications

  • Must be male due to providing personal care
  • Must be over 25 years of age due to insurance restrictions for driving the client’s vehicle
  • Full UK driving license (endorsements to be disclosed)
  • Experience with and qualifications in caring for young people with severe physical disabilities
  • Ability to work with specialist equipment (training provided)
  • Excellent communication skills and IT literacy
  • Patience, reliability, and trustworthiness
  • Willingness to work flexibly and cover shifts, sometimes at short notice

Desirable skills:

  • Shared interests with the client (music, drama, film, TV)
  • Experience in carrying out therapy programs
  • Knowledge of deaf awareness techniques
  • Understanding of communication aids (low and high tech)
  • Previous experience using specialist equipment with disabled people

Compensation

  • £15.00 per hour on weekdays
  • £17.00 per hour on weekends and bank holidays
  • 5.6 weeks annual leave pro rata
  • Pension (subject to qualifying status)
  • Free DBS check
  • Ongoing training and support provided
  • Location: Swindon
  • Hours: 1 x Permanent position (minimum 30 hours per week) and 1 x Bank position available
  • Typical shift: 5 to 7 hours (e.g., 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm or 3:00 pm to 9:30 pm)
  • Support not required on Wednesdays or Sundays
  • Start Date: ASAP (subject to satisfactory employment checks)
  • Must use own vehicle for on-duty travel and to attend training
  • Working environment: Family home with three cats
